Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
The increasing prevalence of crime in urban centers has led to the integration of technology into crime detection and prevention efforts worldwide. In Nigeria, the use of technology in crime detection is still in its early stages, with most urban areas gradually embracing innovations such as surveillance systems, data analytics, and digital policing. Makurdi Local Government Area, the capital of Benue State, has not been immune to rising crime rates, particularly in the realms of theft, armed robbery, and cybercrime. Recent studies by Eze (2023) show that Makurdi, like many Nigerian cities, faces challenges in curbing crime due to limited law enforcement resources. Consequently, there has been an increasing reliance on technology to support policing efforts. Technologies such as closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, drones, and mobile crime-reporting applications are now being deployed to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of security operations in Makurdi. This study will assess the current use of technology in crime detection in Makurdi, exploring how technological innovations are being employed to combat crime, their effectiveness, and the challenges encountered in their implementation.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although technological advancements have proven to be effective in crime detection in many developed nations, the application of such technologies in Makurdi remains underexplored. While some security agencies have adopted modern technologies, there are concerns about the level of integration, the adequacy of resources, and the overall impact of these technologies on crime detection and prevention. This study aims to investigate how technology is being utilized to detect and combat crime in Makurdi and assess whether its implementation has led to a significant reduction in criminal activities.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the types of technology currently used in crime detection in Makurdi LGA.

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of technology in detecting and preventing crime in Makurdi.

  • To identify the challenges faced in integrating technology into crime detection in Makurdi.

1.4 Research Questions

  • What types of technology are currently being used in crime detection in Makurdi LGA?

  • How effective is technology in detecting and preventing crime in Makurdi?

  • What challenges hinder the successful implementation of technology in crime detection in Makurdi?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • H₀: Technology does not significantly enhance crime detection in Makurdi LGA.

  • H₁: Technology significantly enhances crime detection in Makurdi LGA.

  • H₂: The integration of technology in crime detection faces significant challenges in Makurdi LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to understanding the role of technology in modernizing crime detection processes within Nigerian urban areas. It will be valuable to policymakers, security agencies, and local authorities in Makurdi, as the findings could guide future investments in crime detection technologies, helping to improve public safety. Furthermore, the study will offer insights into how technology can be effectively integrated into policing in urban Nigeria, providing a model for other regions with similar challenges.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the use of technology in crime detection in Makurdi LGA, with particular attention to the types of technology deployed, their effectiveness, and the challenges encountered in their application. The study will be limited to urban crime and will not consider rural crime detection practices. A limitation of the study includes potential biases in the responses from law enforcement officers and the reluctance of security personnel to share detailed information due to security concerns.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Technology in Crime Detection: The use of digital tools, surveillance systems, and other modern technologies to identify, monitor, and prevent criminal activities.

  • Crime Prevention: Strategies and measures implemented to reduce the occurrence of criminal activities.

  • Surveillance Systems: Tools such as CCTV cameras, drones, and monitoring software used to track and observe criminal activities in public spaces.
